DMK41 or DMK21 (or both)

Recommended Posts

I am looking at updating my planetary imaging kit to a DMK21 (with the ICX618ALA chip for more sensitivity). I first was leaning towards a DFK, but I just snapped up a filter wheel, so now the DMK seems better. I also want to do solar H-alpha imaging. For this, the DMK41 would be better. Is the latter still suitable for planets? I do not get the benefit of higher frame rates of the DMK21, but I can get the whole solar disk. On the other hand, If I get the DMK21, I cannot get the whole solar disk, but I do get higher frame rates.

Any thoughts?

DMK31 and 41 are getting old and over-expensive for what they offer (for what new cameras can offer at lower price). DMK41 is in general to slow for planetary imaging. If you want a 2 in 1 camera then it must support ROI - choosing a smaller subframe of the sensor with faster framerate. TIS cameras can't do that. You would have to check IDS/Point Grey cameras (or maybe even Ximea USB3, but that's very fresh).
