flickering star

Hi guys, this might sound as though i am think, and at times I guess you are all right, the reason being my unusual thicky queston. I have just this minute popped my head out of the door and noticed a star fickering vigarously, and changing colour, cannot pin point its location, but i am sure if you look out you can see it. just wanted to know what it is

Is it quite low to the horizon? If so, it's a common effect. Many stars will appear to do this when low in the sky.
