why do we wait for meteor showers when we could make our own?

Well, yeah, but falling satellites, and the space shuttle, glow on reentry, so shurely we could just get our balls in orbit and then deorbit them, in a targeted fashion?

Material that burns up during reentry was moving at what? Anyone....anyone? Orbital velocity, 24,000+ mph, so yes, it heats up. Something towed up very, very high and dropped will only reach terminal velocity due to gravity and wind resistance, no more.

Getting my balls in space is a whole 'nother thread.
