I saw a Borg cube!

Recommended Posts

Well maybe not:

But with my new Vixen 10mm EP used with my 2x Barlow I did see Saturn and moons which was fantastic! The best I have seen; Saturn is amazing. Then a quick look at Mars and Venus; goodness they are bright, even with the Baader IR Cut Moon filter.

Then I saw my first dso's - M13 and M92(?) Fantastic. I do need a nebula filter. As I was looking at M92 a meteor or something very bright whipped across my field of vision. It wasn't a satellite. It may have been a Borg cube!

I have at last discovered Astronomy. Last night was great.

BTW: Been looking for a TAL 2x Barlow second hand - Are they rare?

rare?

I also saw a bright object, about 10.30pm. Looked just like a star but was moving in a dead straight line from south to north (ish). Took about 30-45 seconds from first appearance to it disappearing out of view. I thought it might be the ISS, but I think it was probably just a satellite (or as you say, a Borg cube :clouds2:)

How do you know it was not a satellite ?

They move pretty quickly across the field of view of a scope.

I was observing M92 last night and saw the same object pass across my field of view. It looked like a satellite to me :clouds2:

When they do pop up they are not a lot cheaper than new so might be worth shelling out for a new one, which is what I did.

Ah - It was about 10:45. It may have been a satelite but I'd seen a shooting star earlier in the same area & assumed it was the same. I know it wasn't a Borg cube or we'd all be assimilated :)

Just got Star Walk app on iPad, and viewing the sky at about the right time yesterday shows that it was Envisat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Envisat). Quite a cool app :)

Was Envisat is indeed the word. RIP to a great satellite and a hugely successful project ;) May it burn up in the atmosphere soon and not collide with anything still working!
