A major treat for the eyes

Wow… so I was just out the back of the house having a quick snack before bed and as I usually do, I call the cats and have a good old look up.

The sky tonight is perfectly clear and the moon alone with the naked eye is quite beautiful. I’m thinking Mars is the red-ish star at about its 10 o’clock position. All very nice.

But completely by fluke as these things happen I guess, I turned east while still looking up and I saw the most impressive asteroid or comet (someone might enlighten me) burning out a little bit further beyond, but in line with Alcor, Alioth, Megrez (of Ursa Major) and was a little bit longer than the sky view distance of Alkaid to Megrez (or about 8 inches if you put your hand up in front of your face). It was amazing!!!

It actually burned out and broke up like a huge firework, with many many clearly separate parts of white, yellow and orange colouring.

I had seen similar about 15 years ago, but that seemed tiny in comparison to tonights treat, previously maybe 2 inches and no obvious breakup back then.

My latitude and longitude is: 52° 21' 18" N / 7° 42' 14" W (and it occurred east of me) and this happened at about 23.35pm (3rd April 2012)

Wow…
