Thanks for the welcome all. Something I mean to mention - when not sailing we are London based and obviously have the dark skies issue to deal with. We are Brixton and wondered where might be the best plac to go to avoid the bright lights. I was thinking of the South Downs as not being too far away but if there is somewhere closer getting down the M23 is easiest for us.

As you are London based, why not look up the recently formed Baker Street Irregular Astro Soc, they meet in Regents Park on a regular basis and they appear to be an upcoming and friendly group of Astronomers
