  1. First time out tonight with new scope.... To cut a long story short - awful! However, the point of this thread is the image attached. The site I was heading for was on Rivington Moor near Bolton, and as I made some height and rounded a bend I couldn't help but notice Jodrell Bank radio telescope lit up like a beacon by the setting sun. When I have checked later I find its all of 35 miles away! I thought it had to be a good omen for the night but not to be.
  2. And welcome from yet another Dave in Lancashire.

    Evening

Hi Roger, and welcome. I take full responsibility for the cloud cover this last week (see sig for details)
  5. Seems to be never ending! We've had a couple of nice mornings recently but by mid-afternoon thick cloud again for the remainder of the day. Fingers crossed for Sunday evening!
  6. That's foxing me at the moment too. I've had the SW200p for almost a week of solid grey cloud now but have done much messing about in the comfort of my lounge ready for the big day. I seem to be stuck here too. I'm sure it's just a noob question but answer please, anyone? **edit to add - just seen CV's answer above **
  7. Look further down the control panel options. Its edit avatar you want.

    Hi Fusteve, welcome!
  9. Clear nights? The expression is familiar, but just remind me.
  10. Turn to page 86 and the Brocken Spectre there is my photograph. Taken in 2001, I think it was.
  11. Hey AndrewH, welcome from Stretford! We can't be that far apart! Dave
  12. If you have an iPhone you probably have the free compass app which came bundled when you bought the phone. That also shows the latitude and longitude along the bottom line. This will be very useful if out in the field somewhere. I've just checked this information against brantuks LatLong finder, above, and they both give the same information. There must be similar app's for android devices too.
  13. Hey Paul! Look at my user name and guess where I'm from? Actually, although I'm from Bolton I live in Manc now, just a mile or so from the Dark Towers. I still get back to the old town two or three times a week though. Anyway, welcome to the forum. dave
  14. Okay, here we go.... Three boxes arrived yesterday and I had to restrain myself not to rip them open straight away. I knew I would have the house to myself all today and could devote time to the task. They are somewhat larger than my wife expected and its worth pointing out that I have no experience of putting this sort of thing together and had no real idea what to expect. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5452.JPG The first box. I imagined this contained the mount.... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5453.JPG ....and was proved correct! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5455.JPG All the bits out of the box and by now I'm getting a little worried - there's an awful lot of it to put together! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5457.JPG Next box. Tripod I should imagine? Correct. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5460.JPG Out of the box and upright. The two weights for the mount are contained in the same box. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5461.JPG One box left. Its either clouds or my new scope.... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5462.JPG Phew! There's a scope in there! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5464.JPG Lets get the mount on the tripod... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5465.JPG and the weights and mounting plate. Some confusion at this point because there was another mounting plate already attached to the tube rings and it wasn't clear which one I should go with but common sense ruled.... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5468.JPG The scope came with tube rings already attached (suppose its safer to transport that way) but I had to remove them and attach them to the plate... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5469.JPG And there we are. Most of the bits attached! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5471.JPG Finder scope in place and I think this one shows an ep there too. A little confusion here too as it seems SW supply both 1.25" and 2" bits for the focus tube. Forgive my confusion if I am mistaken on that. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5474.JPG Maplins power supply in situ and the goto guidance attached to see if it lit up or blew up... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10999041/IMG_5478.JPG Impressions? Well, I was pretty worried when I opened the boxes and saw the contents but it all went together beautifully and I had no real problems. I've now tidied up and hoovered up (got to keep on her good side) so the lounge looks more or less as it was before yesterdays arrivals. Except for this ginormous telescope sat in the middle of the room! I've got lots of reading to do now to learn how to set the thing up out in the field rather than my lounge! With luck I should be ready to take it out by,oh...July? Ish? Is it portable? Good job I am 6'4" and pretty strong so i think I'll manage okay. I intend to store the tripod and mount in their assembled state (please inform if that isn't advisable) and just take the weights off. The scope itself can live in the protective box it arrived in for a while and I'll transport to site in that same box then attach on site. I have used Dropbox for the images and copied the public links into the 'insert link' box. As I prepare to press the 'send' button on this post only the links are showing but I expect that to change to images when I do press send. if they do I shall delete this last sentence. If they don't perhaps some kind soul can tell me what went wrong. Oh, one last thing. I would have posted a very positive review of FLO but I do not have the necessary 50 posts to use that forum. Excellent service, excellent packaging, just four days from order to delivery, very impressed! And just £5 for p&p!
