Lucas Mesu has some ideas along these lines as well. For an idea of scale just look at the little stand carrying the Argo Navis handset. That stand is waist high. I have the same in the observatoory holding Yves' telescope. This mount is not a toy! As for the friction drive, the one we have here is working beautifully. Boy, I'd love a flip-free mount. (If you don't image in the north then the so-called 'English mount', a fork supported above as well as below the telescope, has to be a great idea as well.)
