Kielder forrest Observing location?

Where is a good place in Kielder forest to set up my scope that is nice and flat with easy access etc...

preferably with OS grid refrence or some way of locating on google maps!!

Elf Kirk is an easy place to find.

The observatory is behind barriers, Elf Kirk isn't. It's just a mile or so after the Kielder Dam travelling North West and signed from the C200 (very good road). Best observing spot.

hi marco ... i see from your signature you are in edinburgh... no offence to kielder , but would you not be better from your location going to the lammermuirs ?? awsome place to set up scope ??

According to the dark sky map my Usual observing location is marginally better I think than the Lammermuirs and a lot easier to get to - Soutra Isle down the A68.

But I want darker.!! There is still skyglow on the northern horizon from Edinburgh/ fife.

Do you know a spot to set up in that is flat yet reasonably well sheltered in the Lammernuirs?

I used to set up at he Ben Lawers cart park but it's really harsh up there at 1000+ft.

i would head for whiteadder reservior , i can assure it is much better than soutra isle , even looking at a map will tell you that , sutra is on a main road south east of edinburgh , whiteadder is high and remote in the lammermuirs , no comparison !!

was it needless lp map you used for your readings ?? its a little dodgy at best !!

.also if you are used to going up the high pass to the ben lawers car park (400m +) , then i would not be heading to kielder (no offence to kielder) , try going past the car park foe about a mile and stop in one of the laybys past the dam

Thanks, i'll go do a reccy during the day for a good place to set up on Whiteadder. I was using Phillips Dark Skies Map.
