LP filter comparison

Recommended Posts

Just taken some images to compare RGB values and come up with the following results (all averages over a uniformly grey image).

No Filter - R:66, G:71, B:75

LP Filter - R:37, G:39, B:59

CL Filter - R:6, G:43, B:54

The LP filter is a skywatcher LP filter, the CL is a new astronomik CLS clip filter.

The CLS filter is the visual one not the CLS-CCD so it's not cutting the IR but it seems to cut the red value dramatically, presumably because the filter in my un-modded EOS 450D IS cutting the red end and IR.

My question is, with that much loss of red is there any point trying to image any nebula type targets at all? And will ordinary star shots not be totally devoid of any of the reddy/orange stars?
