Using a Vernier scale on the CG-5

Recommended Posts

Now, questions about the accuracy of the setting circles on eq mounts, I have acquired a celestron c6-s with a CG-5 mount. I've been trying to work out the setting circles and have a question.

The reading and use of the Vernier scales I understand, but on the model of cg-5 that I have, the zero on the Vernier is not aligned with the indicator on the R.A. Circle. in other words, the mark on the mount body which shows where to read R.A. From does not line up with the zero on the scale.

Should I just use the zero on the scale as my indicator or is there some other method?

I do not have the mount you refer to but from past threads on the issue of these scales they are to small to be of any real use other than to assist in Polar aligning, Astro_Baby`s guide on this subject is one of the best there is and shows how to use the scales on your mount ;)

Update: Well I evidently didn't read it well enough, or it was poorly explained. In case anyone else finds this looking for information, this is a quote from the old CG-4 mount manual:

Before we go into the specifics on how to use the vernier, let’s take a look at the scale and learn how to read it. First, the zero (0) mark on the vernier is the R.A. indicator and will hereafter be referred to as such.

Why they left this out of my manual I have no idea...
