Has anyone tried polar aligning a Celestron SE mount?

I was supposed to have a HEQ5 Pro by now, but things came along to cut down my plans. So now I am going to try some short focal length imaging (18 to 200mm, maybe 400mm at a push) using my SE mount....

Cloud has prevented me from trying, but I'm wondering if anyone else has tried, or I am hopelessly misguided - no pun intended!

Celestron do a wedge to allow just that with the SE. It is very expensive though. With a bit of thought and techie know how I would imagine it would not be impossible to make a suitable wedge.

I have the little SE mount with a built-in wedge. I've previously ridiculed this wedge for its crudity, but I'm going to try it out anyway. What have I got to lose, except possibly my sanity?

The little one comes with a wedge, the wedge for the bigger ones sells as a separte unit, but as I said is expensive.
