Which Barlow should I get: achromatic or apochromatic

Recommended Posts

Probably a newbie question but here it goes.

Weirdly enough I didn't get any Barlow lenses with my scope and am thinking about purchasing one. I have 150/1200 Newtonian telescope so am not sure which type of Barlow to take. At the moment I have 10mm and 25mm EPs so I am not sure I'd need more than 3x Barlow as I don't have motorized mount.

Question is, which Barlow lenses would you suggest? Are there any effects of getting apochromatic instead of achromatic lenses on Newtonian scopes?

Thanks! <3

The important thing is to get a barlow of good optical quality. Whether it has 2 or 3 elements is less important.

The names to look for are the TAL 2x, Celestron Ultima 2x (or the Orion Shorty Plus 2x which is the same thing), The Tele Vue 2x or the superb Tele Vue Powermate 2.5x.

There is a big price variation in these and the optical quality does improve with price but the TAL is a pretty effective tool for what it costs.

In truth I'm not sure that there is such a thing as an apochromatic barlow - some do have more lens elements than others though and the Powermate is not a barlow but has the same effect, only a bit better ;)

Thank you for your reply. Am not sure I have many choices regarding these lenses unless I want to order from abroad. But now I know what to look for.
