Variable stars

Recommended Posts

Hi Simon, I wonder if the answer to your question is that your abbreviaiton stands for Variation Period? Its only a guess but if you let me know which list you're looking at maybe I could come up with a better guess. :)

I've Goggled a few of the entries in the sheet and they were all eclipsing binaries so "v_pri" could be the primary minimum at visual wavelengths.

Just an (un)educated guess and I don't know how the numbers in the sheet would have been derived.

I only checked about 6 or 7 entries but they were all binaries or suspected binaries. There are other subsets of eclipsing binaries that are not marked "EB", eg. the top entry is Algol which is an eclipsing binary, its Simbad classification is Al* (eclipsing Algol type binary). The second star on the sheet is a binary marked "SB*" (spectroscopic binary) etc etc.
