Eclipse Glasses with Binoculars
abumuhannadh replied to abumuhannadh's topic in Getting Started With Observing
Thanks, was confused because i thought, the light is focused into my cornea and the glasses are not in the focus point so it might not get the heat to burn it. instead reflect most of it and somehow make it safe for my cornea. just a thought. -
Hi, If i wear an eclipse glasses and view the sun through a binocular, will it fry my eyes or will i be ok?? may be a dumb question but i am not gonna find it the hard way.

Orion by the river.

nice first time seeing it at standing position. where i am from, it rises and sets on its side. HERE is a picture i took last summer -
i was able to see Venus in the daylight (the sun 32 degrees up) a week ago, naked eye. it was about 9:50 am. and the sky was so blue, the moon which was pretty close helped me focus my eyes. and Venus was very bright even at that time that i am sure even if the moon wasn't there to help i would have focused on it. i did not try to find it later in the day, i might have if i tried.

wikipedia says : "The extreme crescent phase of Venus can be seen without a telescope by those with exceptionally acute eyesight, at the limit of human perception. The angular resolution of the naked eye is about 1 minute of arc. The apparent disk of Venus' extreme crescent measures between 60.2 and 68 seconds of arc, depending on the distance from Earth. Nevertheless it is possible for observers with extremely acute eyesight to see a crescent Venus under ideal atmospheric circumstances. There have been numerous reports stating such observations." so it IS possible. but i wear glasses, how the hell would my eyesight be counted exceptional??

today morning i saw Venus after opposition for the first time. it was about 8 degrees above horizon and the twilight was starting to get bright. i was startled by what i saw. it was a crescent. i didn't know the phase could be viewed naked eye. i wasn't sure of what i saw, i thought it was because i knew it would be a crescent at this time that i perceived it as such. so i showed it to a friend who is not into astronomy and asked if it looks like crescent. he said yes and he also correctly said the side it was facing. so i knew i wasn't imagining it. but i am still confused. is it possible to see the phase naked eye? may be it looked like a crescent cos it was close from horizon? (there was not a hint of a cloud).

on October 23, a friend in Iceland pictured this. -
i have managed to see stars with magnitude 5.5 naked eye (with glasses, if that counts), never tried to find Uranus though. may be i should try when the moon gets away from it.

The end of understanding?

i guess most of these are small rocks that would burn out in Earth's atmosphere?

hi, i remember guys here discussing about iphone apps related to astronomy. one particular application was very interesting for me. it shows you which star you are looking at when you point the phone at it. i am no iphone owner. but i have a Nokia N97 mini which too, like iphone, had built-in GPS, accelerometer and compass. so i was expecting this kind of application to come to Nokia Ovi Store soon. and now my waiting is over Astroller does the same thing, and it isn't expensive either. just US$2.29. and works very good on my Nokia N97 mini. if you have a Nokia N97 or N97 mini, you can now buy it from Nokia Ovi Store or use the ovistore application in your phone. -Ali
