  1. Thanks for the hints Geoff! In your setup, I don't think it'd be possible to use this 2" filter, the same as mine - that's whats a little confusing to me. Does your 2" adapter unscrew to reveal a thread, between the dovetail end and the barrel?
  2. For anyone that might find this thread, this post here is enlightening: https://agenaastro.com/articles/guides/miscellaneous/astronomy-threads-explained.html It seems my T-thread is a M42 x 0.75, and the "2 inch" thread is M48 x 0.75. I think I can buy adaptors / extension tubes around this info.
  3. I'm trying to put together a modest rig with a D5100 that I've modded and my 200p newt scope. When I removed my hot mirror, I bought an external 2" ZWO astro replacement, expecting to be able to mount this in the scope and use the T ring adaptor in as normal. I'm a little frustrated tonight having finally received the thing, and it's not fitting on the T-threads (obviously that's not standard 2"...) Is there an adaptor I need? Is there a specific name for the 2" thread? It fits my 2" skywatcher eyepiece (that I also need an extension tube for, but don't know how to describe the thread!) To complicate things I also have another extension tube that came with my Nikon-T adapter that seems to be larger than 1.25" but doesn't match up with anything else! There's also the 2" holder on the scope which is another thread altogether 🙃 From the below picture: I would like the filter in between A and B (or C), and the only thing it fits to is D (which I need an extension tube to focus with!) I'm guessing I need an embiggener from A to filter, and then an ensmallener back to B again 🙃 Thanks for any help, I'm lost!
  4. Ah okay. I'm a beginner at this, and I've been shooting with my D3300 till now, got this camera just for astro so I was a bit dismayed at the sheer amount of these pixels jumping out at me - I thought I had broken the camera with the firmware hack! If this is actually pretty typical then I will go ahead and do the mod and get shooting. I struggle to find time in the evenings as I have a young baby, so I want my gear all ready to go when I go to shoot - I haven't got any proper light frames from the camera yet. If I can rely on the calibration frames, I will go for the true dark current mod, get the frames straight off the sensor in uncompressed RAW, and see how much better it is than my D3300!
  5. Hey all, I want to mod a D5100 to remove the IR/UV filter (and substitute a ZWO 2" astro one). One thing I've read about though, is the "star eater" filter that these cameras have. I managed to do the patch to remove this, but whenever I do, I get horrendous hot pixels, all over the frame. I've not seen anyone else reporting this... what am I doing wrong? If I put the old firmware back the issue goes away, but I won't want to get modding this thing if it's not going to be good for the job... I've actually done this with 2 cameras (Don't ask xD) and it's the same result with both... Is the patch just bad? Attached is the frame - when I apply star eater removal I get this. If I do the "True dark current" mod, I get the same but with a magenta hue. Anyone else using a 5100?
