  1. I've got the book called Planets by Brian cox and Andrew something i can't remember. I find this book easier to read than Wanders of the solar system because there's no science, whereas in the book Wanders of the solar system, he talks about the science E=MC2 and things, WHAT! no not interested. Shall i skip Wanders of the solar system and just read Planets? They are the same thing really, they are part of the solar system. Here is a review i found about Wanders of the solar system, Narcissistic personality disorder involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration. Others often describe people with NPD as cocky, manipulative, selfish, patronizing, and demanding. I bought this book for my ten year old son, to further his interest in astronomy, a book we read together. I am satisfied my son's intellect was not impaired by the experience of reading this as he came to the same conclusion I did, a conclusion which best described as unfavourable. Ash
  2. what about the science in books, do i skip it?
  3. I'm not an OU student so i may not be allowed to use the scope., plus im not sure how it works Are you saying that i can read Brian cox's books and just skip the science? Ash
  4. Hi guys thanks for all your replies, the worldwide telescope sounds good and i have used it but it's not live, i'd rather look at things live. I met a guy on holiday at the beginning of May and he was into astronomy and he's liked it since he was young, he was 32 when i met him. I asked him what part of astronomy are you interested in most? He said i like black holes because nobody knows much about them. How can i get like him? He called himself a space nerd. I'm not that much into astronomy i wish i knew more. He mentioned he reads Brian cox books, but from my point of view Brian cox books goes into the science of the universe and the solar system. How can i learn astronomy without being confused with the science? Non scientific astronomy. I'm not really interested in the science of space, i just like facts not confusion which is what Brian cox does. Ash
  5. I don't really want to get into the science behind astronomy, i just want to look at images of stars planets nebulae. I was reading Planets by Brian cox and i enjoyed it because it wasn't scientific, it just gave the plain facts which is what i like. Whereas the book Wanders of the solar system by Brian cox does look at the science behind the sun which i get a mental block with. I know that at the suns core hydrogen atoms and fusing together to for helium and that releases energy, called nuclear fusion, thats all i know about the sun, and also the various features on the photosphere.
  6. I don't even understand Brian cox's book Wanders of the solar system, here's a little from the book. Nuclear fusion is the process by which all the chemical elements in the Universe, other than hydrogen, were produced. There are just three fundamental building blocks of matter required to make up everything we can see – from the most distant stars to the smallest piece of dust in our Solar System. Two kinds, the Up and Down quarks, make up the protons and neutrons in the atomic nuclei, and a third, the electrons, orbit around the nuclei to make atoms. These particles make up literally everything, including the book you are reading, the hand holding the book and the eyes reading the print. We live in a universe that is simple at heart! I thought i was clever.
  7. Hi guys i have joined an online telescope site and there are various lessons, called quests, that you have to complete in order to get gravity points. I tried a beginner quest about nebula and i din't understand the terminology. I was told my a member of the site that i need to understand science to understand astronomy. I suffered head injury wen i was young so i it difficult to learn things. It's kind of put me off astronomy, so i can't know about what's up there without understanding science? Here is a little of the definition of Emission nebulae from the site i joined, Emission nebulae are clouds of ionized gases that emit their own light. What?? I give up! Ash
  8. Hi its Ash, im still confused as how i can do astronomy indoors. I'm always on the internet but online telescopes are a no no as they cost a lot and i have to edit the images myself which i don't fancy doing. I go on the night skies network website to see who's broadcasting, it can be solar broadcasting, planetary or deep space. People don't often broadcast but when they do i enjoy it. I've started reading Planets by Brian cox, it's about the solar system, how it began to it's future. I'm enjoying it as im learning about our solar system. Should i read Astronomy magazines aswel? So for stargazing, should i watch night skies network and aswel as that read books on astronomy? What astronomy sites could i look at if no one is broadcasting on night skies network? Thank you.
  9. What can i do to enjoy astronomy? I can't go outside stargazing and it's more often than not cloudy at night, so it seems i can only enjoy astronomy online somehow. What can i do to enjoy this hobby, what websites can i go on aswel as to learn about astronomy? I thought maybe if i fancy stargazing one evening, opening stellarium and learning names of stars and learning what galaxy is in what constellation . I don't know that was a thought, but using stellarium isn't live. As regards to online telescopes i dont want to pay 50 pounds. What other sites could i use please not just for online telescopes? Is using online telescopes a must? I feel i can't do astronomy unless its via the internet. Ash
  10. Thanks for your replies. Let me tell you a little about myself, my name is Ash, im 44 and live in the united kingdom. I'm disabled and use a wheelchair. I like astronomy as i used to go out with a friend at night to look at the stars but that was 20 years ago. Since then i have watched astronomy documentaries on youtube but in recent years i've not been able to go outside at night to stargaze because the cold weather gets to me and makes my disability worse. I looked at online telescopes but the prices are stupid. I looked at slooh.com and that site just confused me, now their prices have gone up since last year so i havent rejoined. How else can i look at the night sky live online? I have stellarium but that isn't live.
  11. Hi I met a guy last week on holiday and he studying prosthetics at university. I was talking to him and he's been interested in space since he was small, he's 34 now. I asked him what interests you most about space? He replied Black holes, the fact that we don't know much about them. Anyway it got me thinking that I want to learn more about space so I found a book by Patrick Moore called Astronomy a complete introduction. What I like about this book is at the end of each chapter there's a list of things to remember. I never know what chapter to start reading from, chapter one is an introduction and explains briefly about the Solar system which I find too simple and I know that stuff. Should I carry on with this book to learn or shall I just read sky at night magazine? W
  12. Where can i watch a live stream of the Lyrid meteor shower please? Ash
  13. Is this book any good to learn from? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Patrick-Moores-Astronomy-Complete-Introduction/dp/1473608759/ref=asc_df_1473608759/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310865071345&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3217099525034374706&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045246&hvtargid=pla-563590850320&psc=1&th=1&psc=1
  14. Hi im Ash, im reading a book on astronomy and im trying to learn some facts but the book i have is a little overwhelming. The book i have is Collins Stargazing. Can you suggest an easier book please to learn facts about the solar system and stars please? Thanks.
  15. Hi i want to do astronomy via the internet as im disabled and im not able to stargaze. What do you think of using Slooh which is an online astronomy site where you can learn about astronomy by earning gravity points and also they have online telescopes which are based in Gran Canaria and Chile. It is my way of doing astronomy but what do you think of slooh, or online telescopes? Ash
  16. I have emails every Friday from Sky and telescope magazine letting me know what's up in the sky and various events. I was thinking, because I'm a member of slooh.com online telescopes, whatever i find in my email that's in the sky this month, could i search for it on slooh then the telescopes could take an image for me? The telescopes are online at 19:55 every night, unless there's bad weather.
  17. People can go outside to stargaze or look for planets, i cant do that. Do i look at Nasa tv, or other astronomy sites rather than looking to watch online stargazing streams? Please tell me what i can do on the computer inside, like i said other people go out looking through telescopes. I joined SLOOH.COM but i only watch thee live telescope views at night. I'm watching a guy on youtube doing a live stream of an astronomy quiz while waiting for the mars rover to land. He's so clever, can you suggest any books to get my knowledge better? I want to understand the solar system and planets mainly.
  18. My name is Ash, im 42 from the UK. I am disabled and use a wheelchair. I like stargazing but im unable to go outside at night with a telescope because I cant get too cold as it makes my disability worse, the sky is always cloudy and there's light pollution where i live. What i'd like to do is to stargaze online but i cant find anyone that does live streams of stargazing. How can i stream stargazing online please and what sites can i use to enjoy online astronomy?
  19. I am a member of SLOOH.com but i don't really know what to do, is mainly for astrophotography? What i want to do is stargaze from my pc indoors and i thought i could do that with Stellarium.
  20. Hi I want to stargazers indoors. I cant go outside as it affects my disability and the skies are always cloudy. I'm always online, either on facebook or you tube. I'd like to do astronomy online but I dont know what I can do. I've looked at stellarium and thought that I can go looking around on it in the evenings. What can I do to plan an evenings observing using stellarium? Is stellarium in real time?
  21. Hi my name is Ash and im from North Wales. im disabled and i use a wheelchair. i'm interested in astronomy but i don't want to use a telescope to look up, i'd like to have knowledge of what's in our solar system and beyond, stars, constellations, planets, etc. How do i go about doing this please, what do you suggest, i'm online alot browsing websites (not astronomy) Could i follow an astronomy website and learn within an online community, what do you suggest please?
