  1. Hi all, Set my alarm for 3am in the wee hours of Saturday morning, drove 20km out to my fave dark site, and snapped this. f/2.8, ISO4000, 15 seconds. On a Nikon D5100 and 24mm lens. Tweaked in LightRoom to lighten some of the detail. Really chuffed with this, checked stellarium to determine when the core of the MW would be high enough from the horizon. Lots of creatures come out at night here, making all sorts of strange noises, so I ended up tethering the camera out of the car window! (you may laugh, but when you shine the torch and see eyes reflecting at you from multiple angles its freaky!) I'm planning to go try again this weekend, theres a church at the dark site, so I want to try and capture that in the foreground. Can anyone suggest some improvements for my shot? Is ISO4000 too high? If I'm shooting with something in the foreground, I'm guessing I need 2 separate shots stacked with diff settings, any tips? Thanls
  2. After a drive back from a dark site doing some AP, I took one last look at the skies from the garden before calling it a night. Clouds had rolled in, but I could see a bright star close to the horizon in a southern direction. I was intrigued because it was flicking between a turquoise, white, and red colour. I grabbed the bins (40x25), it was definitely a star and not an aircraft (single point of light, small like a star, not moving). Having checked stellarium, its most likely to be fomalhaut or achernar, unfortunately as cloud covered most of the sky and LP leaking up from the horizon, I couldn't see any other stars to use as a reference. 5:15 am, Melbourne time About 10-20 degrees up from the horizon Southern direction, about 150 degrees Having checked the wikipedia entries, both are listed as blue stars, which one did I see?!
  3. First proper attempt on the LMC. Nikon D5100, 24-85mm lens (zoomed to 85mm, then cropped). ISO 4000, 15 second exposure, f/4.0 I cropped the image, then increased exposure, reduced temperature, used curves to make it more apparent. It's got a blue tint to it which I'm not sure is correct, but I like it anyway I'm just starting out with AP so welcome any feedback.   4. I haven't actually tried both side by side, on same subject (something for the weekend I guess). I've just tried the 24mm in the garden and it seems to be a lot sharper than the 18mm as you mentioned
  5. I've noticed that on my widefield shots, the stars in the corners of the image all have small trails that lead back to the centre of the image. ISO 1600, 24mm lens, f/2.8, 15 second single exposure Heres a close up of the bottom right hand corner The stars in the centre of the image don't have a trail, which indicates the exposure time is fine What can I do to prevent obvious trailing in the corners? p.s., is that red pixel in the second image a dead pixel? Seems rather odd..
  6. I have these 2 lenses for my D5100: AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5AF Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8I've currently been using the 18mm, but the consensus from tutorials I've been reading is that "aperture is king". Prioritise aperture or length?

  8. Thanks for the heads up on BudgetAstro, I ended up watching them all in one go last night, very useful stuff! Yeah its a big change, being able to see the milkyway from my back yard is nice I'm assuming by your username you were once down this way? Thanks, I ended up caving in. Theres a 30 day trial on Photoshop CC (no payment details needed upfront). This is what I was able to come up with (from the above raw), opinions/suggestions welcome!   9. Hi, I'm new to astrophotography and am looking for some advice on how to bring out the best in my photos. I took advantage of some clear skies last night and got this (it's jpeg, but I have the raw version of it) f/3.5 ISO 6400 18mm on Nikkon d5100 15 sec I've watched a bunch of tutorials on youtube for processing the milky way, but they're all on Photoshop. I don't have photoshop and can't justify buying it. CS2 is a free download but unfortunately it doesn't work on mac! So I'm stuck with GIMP. I can't find any good GIMP tutorials, and the photoshop tutorials don't translate to GIMP very well, so I'm a bit stuck. Is it possible to bring out the colour in the milkyway from this image, the "cloud" looks very feint. Thanks
  10. Can someone please help me identify these 2 objects? Having checked Stellarium, I think the top one is the Large Magellanic Cloud in Mensa. The bottom is in Tucana but I'm not sure what the object is. thanks

Hi, It's my first time shooting the southern skies, so obviously I went straight for the iconic crux I'm using a Nikkon D5100 with an 18-55mm lens. f/3.5 25 second exposure ISO 800 I was taking single exposures, in raw + jpeg. I took around 30 photos tonight, varying the ISO/exposure to experiment, however all photos have turned out blurred. What can I do to stop this? Lots of light pollution from the moon, but I was using tonight as a "practice run" Thanks

I'm an SLR noob, but after a visit to the Mallorca Planetarium (well worth the €10 if you're out that way, tripadvisor link), I switched it into manual and took advantage of some good dark skies. Taken on a Nikkon D5100 with 18-55mm lens. I found the best results when using ISO 5000 and an exposure of 20 seconds, all shot in standard JPEG at "fine" setting. Any tips on what to try next? I don't have a scope any more, so its purely camera/tripod only!

Say, hypothetically speaking, I was to create an application that shows star locations in 3D, relative to each other, so you could "set focus" on the sun, or mizor, or alcor, and then see stars around those. like a 3d map sort of... .. Is there anywhere I can get my data from? ie a database of star locations with 3 dimensional co-ordinates?
  15. Yes, I had it on manual. I first tried with automatic, but the camera would refuse to take any photos, it kept saying "subject is too dark" and would refuse to comply The only way I could get it to take a snap is to switch it to manual Is that a bad thing?
