I went outside before moonrise to find The Golfputter, and I succeeded. I saw a shooting star pass from south to north just below M31. The last 10 minutes were consumed by a conversation with the next door neighbor, who'd stepped outside for a cigarette.

    DEEP SKY OBJECTS:

    M31 (SG/And)                     -
    M33 (SG/Tri)                       Same hazy patch
    M36 (OC/Aur)                     -
    M37 (OC/Aur)                     -
    M38 (OC/Aur)                     -
M45 (OC/Tau)                    Naked-eye only.   I doubt I'll ever resolve more than two points of light.
    Mel 20 (OC/Per)                 -
NGC 752 (OC/And)           I liked it! It appears as a widely distributed patch of stars; I pictured them as grains of sand being disturbed by the Golfputter.
Golfputter (As/And)          First sighting! It's distinct, but unlike Kemble's Cascade, doesn't suffer when viewed through lower magnification.

Another brief sojourn. I was irritated when I began because I've felt as if I've neither learned nor see anything new lately. So, I stared at Alpheratz (α And) for a while to calm myself, and discovered that it's surrounded by several stars; I counted approximately 10. Taken as a whole, it looks like a folded napkin or a newspaper folded into the shape of a boat. I practiced hopping from α to δ to β, and from there up to M31, and this is a surer way of finding the galaxy than my previous method which was little more than pointing the binoculars at Cassiopeia and sweeping to the right (South) hoping to come across it. M31 itself is to the left (North?) of the trianlge of stars: HIP 2948, 32 And, & υ And; within this triangle of bright stars, I counted six or seven dimmer ones.
I enjoyed the little time I had outdoors, and with reluctance returned indoors to complete the paperwork I have to prepapre for work tomorrow. The more I use the 8x42 and 10x50, the more I appreciate them.
The Moon is almost half-full, and it was having a negative effect on the visibility of the stars. The smiling face in Auriga was barely discernible, but none of the OC's were visible.
    CONSTELLATIONS: And / Aql / Aur / Cas / Cyg / Del / Peg / Per / Sge
    DEEP SKY OBJECTS:
Cr 399 (As/Vul)             Diminished by the moonlight
Kemble 1 (As/Cam)      HIP 18505 (bright star in the middle), NGC 1502 & NGC 19139 only
Mel 20 (OC/Per)           Looked good; it wasn't adversely affected by the moonlight
M31 (SG/And)              No less beautiful because of the smaller aperture
    NGC 869 (OC/Per)        Meh
    NGC 884 (OC/Per)        Meh
    NGC 1502 (OC/Cam)   Visible

A brief session, cut short because of the clouds that came in from the west, and covered everything. I had hoped to locate M56 and M57. I stared at Lyra for 5 minutes, but could not detect anything. Deneb's disappearing behind the clouds was the last thing I saw.
CONSTELLATIONS:      Cas / Lyr / Sge
    DEEP SKY OBJECTS:
Cr399 (AS/Vul)               Nice, until the clouds came
Kemble 1 (AS/Cam)       Good until the clouds came
M2 (GC/Aqr)                  Seen before the clouds arrived; it looked good; the shopping cart was distinct
M11 (OC/Scu)                Low in the west, and negatively affected by clouds and horizon scum
M13 (GC/Her)                Mostly obscured by clouds
    M31 (SG/And)               Greatly diminished
Mel-20 (OC/Per)            Okay until the clouds arrived
NGC 663 (OC/Cas)       It was conspicuous, and pleasant to look at until the clouds came
NGC 869 (OC/Per)       Good until the clouds came

No 8 / Nov. 3, 2016 / Home / 1830-1940 / Clouds in the North & East, winds calm / 8x42 & 10x50 A cold night, but there are clouds in the East and North. Seen through the 10x, the stars that surround Deneb (α Cyg) appear to form the shape of a heart. With the naked eye, I was able to at last make out Cepheus and portions of Aquarius. Cr399 (As/Sge) -
IC 4665 (OC/Oph) Summer Beehive Cluster (in 10x only)
IC 4756 (OC/Oph) Graff's ClusterI saw it this time in the 10x; it has a low surface brightness (12.6), but in the area bounded by HIPs 91499, 91418A, and 91220, I could see
a misty patch. Using averted vision helped.
Kemble-1 (As/Cam) It's getting easier to find this. It does deserve the 15x
    Mel-20 (OC/Per) -
M2 (GC/Aqr) Discernible in the 10x; the shopping cart was not easily seen
M11 (OC/Scu) The Wild Duck Cluster
    M13 (GC/Her) Quite dim

I spent more time using the 8x binoculars, and I was pleased. I heard the whistling sound of two ducks flying overhead.
    Cr399 (As/Sge) - Attractive in both 8x and 15x
    Kemble-1 (As/Cam)- The 8x can't do it justice.
    Mel-20 (OC/Per) -
    M2 (GC/Aqr) - Detectable in the 8x
M13 (GC/Her) - Seen as it was about to drop behind the hills to the north; dim
    M31 (SG/And) -
M33 (SG/Tri) - I was surprised that I could make it out in the smaller binoculars!
M36 (OC/Aur) - I think this is the best of the Messier objects in Auriga
    M37 (OC/Aur) -
    M38 (OC/Aur) -

    № 6 / Oct. 27, 2016 / Home / 1945 – 2150 JST / Clear skies / 15x70, 10x50
This night was an improvement over that of October 26th: the skies were clear and the winder were calm. The ghost of the Milky Way was visible, and I could make out the fuzziness surrounding the Double Cluster in my peripheral vision. An initial impression was that M35, 36, 37, and 38 offer better views through the 10x than the 15x.
I saw three shooting stars: from North to South in front of M2, from South to North in front of M33, and from South to North in front of NGC 1528.
    Kemble1 1 (AS/Cam)  -
    Mel 20 (OC/Per)     -
M2 (GC/Aqr)         First sighting. A compact gray sphere, similar to M13. Seen through the the narrower FOV of the 15x binoculars, M2 occupies a relatively empty
patch in the sky, floating in splendid isolation. It's above a collection of five stars that reminded me of a shopping cart: HIP 106375 (handle),
HIPs: 106325 (upper inboard edge of cart), 106236 (rear-wheel), and 106161 (front wheel).  Seen through the 10x, M2 made me think that the binoculars had
gone out of focus. It is definitely better in the 15x
    M11 (GC/Scu)       -
    M13 (GC/Her)       Better in the 15x.
M31 (SG/And)       Bright and elongated. Better in the 15x.
M33 (SG/Tri)       A light gray area, bounded by stars HIP 7123, 7269A, and 7403. I didn't see a core such as M31 has, but I have no more doubts about its presence.
    M34 (OC/Per)       Very nice
M35 (OC/Gem)       First sighting, and pleasant to behold. It appeared to be about the same size as M38, and one can resolve 5-6 stars with averted vision. Located in
a line with 5 Gem (to the left) and HIP 28969 and 1 Gem to the right. It looked like mist to me, and I thought the view through the 10x was better than
                       the 15x.
M36 (OC/Aur)       Using averted vision, I could resolve three or four stars.
M37 (OC/Aur)       I couldn't detect any light; to me it was a misty gray patch on the sky. It's not unattractive, but nor is it anything to write home about.
M38 (OC/Aur)       Appears to be the largest of the Messiers in Auriga; I saw neither points of light, nor a bright spot, but in clear, dark skies such as I had last
night, the cluster is an obvious patch of mist to the left of the face.
M71 (GC/Sge)       This was the clearest view I've had thus far. Sagitta was lower, allowing a longer and more comfortable look. To me, M71 is a smudge, or gray patch
just above and to the left of 9 Sge, HIPs 97818 & 97840; it didn't appear globular, but contrasted sufficiently to be noticeable.
M42 (DN/Ori)       Seen before calling it a night. It was still low in the East, but the nebulosity was plainly visible; in the 15x70, I saw 3 points of light, but
                       in the 10x only 2.
M45 (OC/Tau)       Without binoculars and using AV, I can only resolve 2 stars.
    M92 (GC/Her)       Better in the 15x.
NGC 1502           A bright patch was visible in the haze.
NGC 1528           A hazy patch with a light at the center
    NGC 663 (OC/Cas)   -
    NGC 869 (OC/Per)   -
    NGC 884 (OC/Per)   -

A disappointing outing. The end of a warm and sunny day coincided with the arrival of the next front; the sky was mostly overcast, but there were plenty of cumulous clouds on hand to fill any gaps in the coverage. An additional downer was that I saw nothing new.
    DEEP SKY OBJECTS:
M22 (GC/Sgr)     I'd have passed by it had I not recognized the surrounding stars: there is a trapezoid above and a triangle below. It was much dimmer.
M8 (EN/Sgr)      M8 was kind enough to briefly appear out of the haze, and I gave my longest look to it. Left to right: a star, a hazy patch, a nebulous bright spot,
and two more stars. I'm aware there are several NGC objects within the Nebula.
M20 (DN/Sgr)      The trapezoidal points of light were just visible in the 15x. There was no contrast between the nebulosity and the surrounding clouds/scum in the sky.
M11 (GC/Scu)      The best sight of the session.
    M92 (GC/Her)      Dim
M13 (GC/Her)      2nd best sight of the night.
    Mel 20 (OC/Per)   Disappointing.
    Stock 2 (AS/Cas)  Disappointing.
    NGC 869 (OC/Per)  Disappointing.
    NGC 884 (OC/Per)  Disappointing.
CONSTELLATIONS: Aql / Cyg / Lyr
    PLANETS: Mars was very orange.

M71 / GC / SGE / AS WAS THE CASE WITH MY PUTATIVE M33, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR TO FIND THIS OBJECT: A DIM, GRAY PATCH THAT BARELY STANDS OUT FROM THE

HEREAFTER, I DECIDED TO LOOK AT MARS, AND SINCE THE TRANSPARENCY WASN'T BAD, I STUCK AROUND THE AREA OF SAGITTARIUS. HERE, I STRUCK GOLD.
M22 / GC / SGR / FIRST SIGHTING! A GRAYISH, CIRCULAR SPOT, MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT THIS IS A GLOBULAR CLUSTER; IT'S LOCATED ABOVE AND TO THE LEFT OF A TRIANGLE OF
STARS WITH 24 SGR AND BELOW AND TO THE RIGHT OF A RECTANGLE OF STARS WITH HIP 91446; ALL SITUATED ABOVE KAUS BOREALIS. VISIBLE IN THE 10X
M28 / GC / SGR / FIRST SIGHTING! A DIM SMUDGE TO THE RIGHT OF KAUS BOREALIS AND THE LEFT OF HIP 89980, I COULDN'T DETECT IT IN THE 10X
M8 / EN / SGR / LAGOON NEBULA. FIRST SIGHTING! MOVING ON TOWARD THE RIGHT (NORTH) AND SLIGHTLY BELOW THE POSITION OF OF KAUS BOREALIS, I SAW FOUR BRIGHT (IN THE 15X,
EVERYTHING LOOKS BRIGHT) STARS IN A WHITE HAZE. VISIBLE IN THE 10X
M20 / DN / SGR / TRIFID NEBULA. FIRST SIGHTING! THIS WAS IN THE SAME FIELD OF VIEW AS THE LAGOON NEBULA, BUT ABOVE AND SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT. I DETECTED 4-5 STARS IN THE

M21 / OC / SGR / FIRST SIGHTING! M21 SITS DIRECTLY ABOVE M20, AND LOOKING AT THEM, I THOUGHT I WAS VIEWING A SINGLE OBJECT. I PICTURED THE TWO AS A HUMAN-LIKE
FIGURE: THE 4-5 STARS OF M20 CONSTITUTING THE TORSO, AND M21 AS THE HEAD. IT LOOKED LIKE A BRIGHT SPOT (STAR?), SURROUNDED BY A LIGHTER HALO OF
NEBULOSITY. IT WAS VISIBLE IN THE 10X.
AFTER THIS, I POINTED THE BINOCULARS TOWARD THE ZENITH, LOOKING INTO THE MILKY WAY. I PASSED SEVERAL POINTS OF INTEREST; THERE'S MUCH TOO SEE.
