Depends on a lot of factors, your experience and mount being a few. The longer FL you image the better your mount needs to be and autoguiding is pretty much essential, a Newtonian also acts like a wind sail so any slight breeze and there's the potential for a ruined sub, therefore the tripod also then plays a major role and needs to be sturdy. A Newtonian from my experience is second best in terms of clarity (quality glass apo refractor being first) but you'll struggle getting the FL with a refractor at a similar price. I think a refractor near 800-1000mm will do well but the F ratio goes up so does your total imaging time. If youre experienced a good tracking Newtonian or dob will work as their light gathering will be an advantage, or an SCT with a focal reducer but sharpness takes a hit in comparison to the above.

This is all becoming more and more technical and very expensive the more I look into it. I've been looking at an NEQ5 maybe with the askar 103 triple apo

Typically no, 99pc of galaxies are quite small. The 80mm will be okay on Andromeda and Triangulum (M101, Bodes, a few clustered galaxies like Markarians Chain will capture), but most others will be tiny, especially on a large DSLR sensor. It's not to say it's useless, this summer I did a nine panel mosaic with my Z61 and captured something like triple digits number of galaxies in the same image (tiny though they were).

Would you suggest a 8" newtonian and a dedicated astro cam?

Hi Billy, I don't have anything to advise regarding astrophotography (I'm very new to it as well) but I see you're in the same town as me! Fellow Hastings resident here *waves*

Hi mate do you ever come to the sussex sidewalk astronomers meet ups? We normally meet up down the old bathing pool you should follow our Facebook page

With ABS look at the post history. What kit has the seller sold in past year for example.
If it is a scope a week, he is an unregistered dealer.
If it was a different scope 6 months ago, he can tell you about that.
Talk to the seller by phone - not just email.

Don't forget there is a lot of overlap of ABS & SGL members.
You can look up the seller SGL name and find his post history on here.
A good contributor? That is a positive sign.
You can also message him on here as a 2nd check on identity.
For example, I have an ABS username but can't remember last time I was on there actively. Anything could have happened.

Thanks mate that's a massive help

  5. It's a manual rocker box unfortunately. Is it possible to nudge it while imaging?. I'd also like to keep my big dob for garden use ideally,it's becoming a pain to load up in the car. A more dedicated astro set up for imaging is the way I would like to go. I'm already looking at a laptop, ideally I'd like to start with a dedicated astro camera that videos the planets and moon while I control it and view from the laptop.

Anyone have any experience with this?

  6. I'm looking at maybe getting into astrophotography I've been visually observing for about a year now with a 10inch bresser.

I do have my worries about astrophotography though as it seems far more expensive and time consuming prossesing data and what not. I've been looking on astro buy and sell and have seen some great refractors but it all seems very daunting buy second hand equipment. I'd love ideally a 80mm ED/apo and a goto mount that's good enough for payload and tracking.

    Thanks
