The biggest improvement possible is bunging the gear in a car and getting out of town . I only did so once so far and the difference is quite dramatic on dso's . Better than any top end eyepiece i recon . of course I realise this isn't always possible .

Wow, those skywatcher eyepieces look massive. Seeing them in a picture never does them justice for size, but your case serves as a good size comparison. You'll need a suitcase for the full set. :-0)
I thought that too. its ma hoosive.
-
I see . Still a terrible title though.
Anyway got to go I'm about to watch
" wonders of the flipping universe "
;-/

I'd say the scale is roughly about right , in relation to each other and excluding background as stated.
Why o why do they need to call a astro page by that title ? I don't use face book any longer , haven't bothered for years.

Just got a Maplins box today.
The box at the top is the one the panaview came in - currently holds a 1.25" and 2" adaptors for the focuser.
I see its your first post devdav. so what scope goes with this selection of eyepieces ?
welcome by the way.

Here is my EP box! Looks a bit simple compared to some on here, although it really just houses the ones I got with my scope. It's a box from staples and cost about a fiver, but it does the job and the picture in the box showed 4 of them holding up a car.......so it must be strong!!!
I pinched the foam from an old recording studio that I was surveying. It had closed down before you ask whether I ruined any sound recordings!!
As I upgrade, I will progress onto one of those nice looking cases
for a second I thought your eyepieces were placed in sand .
-
my good god, that's horrendous ! you really do have light pollution there.
-
the orion nebula is certainly worth looking up . its large but also bright compared to a lot of objects.
great images by the way.

Here's my modest Maplins case. It's a work in progress but look at the space I have to fill! Now, what do I get next? Hmmm, think I'll have a ponder while I finish that pint of Duff
I notice on your sig you have a 32mm aero , isn't it a 30 ? .
have I nothing better to do with my time ..... nah

nice review. I think for under £50 its a good set up particularly for children, as it would be easy to use, light and most importantly it WORKS. theres some £50 + scopes about that would put anyone off astronomy . but this seems to at least have the capacity to give some decent views.
thanks for the review.

Damo , thanks for the reply. I'm keeping an eye for some bins and need a short list and these are now on it . ( the Olympus unfortunately not the Helios) many thanks .
-
Very nice looking bins. I noticed you had a comparison picture with some Olympus dps . How did they perform for you ( obviously not compared to the Helios). Interested as they seem to pop up quite cheaply now and then .

i had 8,12,18 bst explorers ,which i eventually moved on for x-cel lx eyepieces. now like all eyepiece discussions, its only my opinion, but i honestly could not see any difference in sharpness, contrast or distortion. there was nothing wrong with the x-cels ,but the bst's felt more comfortable to use . combine that with the fact they are cheaper ,quite alot cheaper to what some suppliers are asking for x-cel lx's, id recomend them all day long. ive never been satisfied since selling them .

what a man, he'll be sadly missed throughout the astronomy world. rest in peace sir.

hope you get back on track soon sir. sometimes we have to do what we have to do. clear skies to you and your bins

thanks john. i think mike and yourself are right,i like what ive read on the aero, ive not seen to much on the baader,i shall do some homework.Nice set Rory (and avatar too !)
I agree with Mike73 - the "gap" in your set is a 2" of around 30-32mm focal length.
The Skywatcher Aero ED's are nice and not too heavy or expensive.
by the way mike, your e/p case looks okay to me bud,i'll swap . cant wait to here the report from you with that beut of a scope with the nagler plopped in the focuser
john, love my comedy, like your sid snot .
-
a few members have mentioned this aspheric you speak of mike. what ever i decide it is going to have to wait until after crimbo,or im in the doghouse !Get the 2" wide field jobby, I always thought my Baader Aspheric work well in my 8".
Everyone on here seems to have all there EP's nicely spaced compared to my case, I guess I got carried away with the pick n pluck!
-
ive got a bunch of e/p's that i believe should keep me satisfied for a fair while now.( isnt that what we all say ?)
so whats in the box (old makita drill case)
7,12,18,25mm x-cel's, 5mm tmb(sw) , lumicon uhc filter, telrad,cheshire,lens pen.headtorch,compass and alan keys.
the space in the top left is for another e/p at some stage, but i dont know if to get a 2" widefield jobby of some description,or fill the gap between the 18 and 12mm e/p's ?
-
that 30mm is a chunky monkey. nice bits o glass you got there.
-
contact alan . he'll advise or replace knowing his reputation.

well as the others advise really, opt for the 10" if you can afford it. ive been very pleased with my 8" dobsonian , but if money wasnt an issue id certainly get more appeture.
good luck with whatever you decide.
-
Heres mine.
Minimal but workable
looks a nice set to me mike. i see youve gone down the slippery green road !
-
How do you get the telrad to fit to a 90mm frak ?? I would have thought a quikfinder would have been more suitable ??
seems fine to me, they are very light. i used cable ties,as the arc of the base seems made for a circumference larger than my o.t.a
love it.

so, its a makita drill case, with the logo ripped off, cost me a tenner and the foam was £5.00 delivered. its perfect for the job. just need a couple more e/p's now.

Thanks for the review of the SL 8”
been out of the game for quite a few years and looking into what’s happening in the dobsonian world these days . Previously owned a second hand SW , but having looked at this and read a few reviews , looks like I’m sold .
Now for the minefield of eyepieces 😬
