A very sad day for Astronomy he truly was a legend. Rest in peace Sir Patrick you will never be forgotten you are an inspiration to us all. What an amazing run he has had on the Sky at Night the only thing to floor him was food poisoning by a Goose egg.

Hey Andy, did your terrestial photos really look the same with just a CWB? I would have thought you would get flat photos with no shadows because of the IR being let in?
This will depend on if you have the filter replaced or removed altogether. The replacement filter will have a UV/IR cut.

Really awe inspiring stuff, what size single tube scope would it be equivalent to in terms of resolution?
I saw a 12" over the shoulder design at Kelling a couple of years ago and that looked pretty awesome but this blows it away.

Nice project, BTW a standard PC USB port should be able to deliver 500mA. An unpowered hub will be 500mA divided by number of ports. A powered hub will be down to the limit of the PSU divided by the number of ports plus any limitation on the contact rating of the USB connector.

A belated many thanks to Steve and James for there excellent service my Atik 383 and filter wheel arrived as promised. There was an initial delay getting the cameras shipped from Atik to FLO but I was kept imformed along the way.
Of course it's been bad weather and technical hitches with the rest of my kit so haven't got any images done yet. I have been itching to get a proper run with it.
I wouldn't hesitate to use them again

I would have to agree with Tim plus there looks to be some chromatic abberation with the Skywatcher compared to the Baader

It's a very useful program Rikyuu and thanks for posting the set of instructions. I have been using it for over a year and it a fantastic program. It's also worth experimenting with the subtract or absolute difference function instead of the divide which works better on some images. You may need to modify the operand R term to around 0.7 for each channel to avoid the image being too clipped

It's an exposure the same length as the flat frame but with the lens/scope covered up. It helps to reduce the noise in the flat frames.

Here's my first attempt taken with a Meade DSI CCD and LX90 10" cant find any details of exposure. This was taken 10.02.2006 after having the scope for a couple of weeks.
I had taken some shots of the Moon before hand which were ok so I choose M42 for my first effort. I had no idea of the field of view of the set up at the time or how large M42 is. I didnt even realise I had only the core of it captured on the image.

What a labour of love this really has to be viewed at the maximum resolution to really begin to appreciate the amount of work put into it. This is a real 'reference image' that people will be bench marking theirs to
I personally like the core to be near saturation as this then shows the large dynamic range of M31 giving it a bit of ' body' rather than it being a very flat image. It's possible to not use layered techniques and using HDR wavelet function to bring out the core as in my image below. Jonas 's fantastic high res image gave me chance to confirm some of the features that I have picked up close to the core.
