Comet 2022 E3 ZTF 21st January 2023
My first comet image, taken from my Bortle 5 back yard. I used my SW150 PDS guided with PHD2. My Canon 600D was connected via the MPCC corrector. All controlled from APT.
I took
40x 120s lights at ISO 400 (no filters)
10x darks
50x bias
50x Flats
Calibrated and aligned in Pixinsight using comet alignment tool, then removed all stars with a trial of Star Xterminator before stacking. I then stacked 10 of my lights with star alignment, then I created a stars image. I chose only 10 frames as the comet had moved a considerable distance over the 80 minutes and I didn't want any comet artifacts in my stars image.
Both images were stretched and aligned, before being cropped to the same resolution. Then I combined both the comet and stars with pixel math.
I'm happy with it for my first comet, however I wished I watched what direction the comet was traveling. I framed my image based on the dust tail thinking it would move down my frame, but it actually moved up. Lesson learned.
