Petavius - moving terminator
Date: 05/11/2017
Video recording taken from my front drive (Bury, Lancs). Despite lots of nearby houses I had very still air to image through. No clouds.
Telescope: SW 150mm F12 Mak-Cass. With a Baader fringe killer filter.
Mount: SW EQ5 pro with extension pillar.
Camera: Canon EOS 550D in 60 frames/s movie crop mode, ISO 200, exposure 1/60s. I took 3 minute recordings (10800 frames).
Processing: Movies were initially processed in Pipp, keeping the best 2000 frames and decompressing them. The decompressed frames were then passed to Registax aligned using 100 points. The best 90% of the frames (using the Registergraph) were kept and stacked. The final image was enhanced by amplifying the first three wavelets by 80, 20, and 5 respectively. Drizzle 2x was also used.
Comments: The terminator is moving west, the first image/movie was taken at about 21:00 and the next was taken at about 23:00 so the animation represents about 2 hours of terminator movement. The slight tilt between the frames is because of lunar liberation, I decided to keep it in the animation. The deepening shadows are clear on all major features here. I like the shadow of Petavius's central peak - it extends out towards the crater walls.
