LP1 filter for Canon Eos 10D

Thanks to a forum member in Belgium, I today received a well-packaged LP1 filter from a Canon 1000D, after a 10 day!) journey across the channel.

The 10D has a very thick single filter, so if this is removed you need to use an IR filter to stop 'bloating'. I was able to use a cheap IR filter with good results except it caused vignetting and it would not be possible to use it with some of my lenses. I also got blue flare on some stars which I presume was UV that the IR filter did not stop. I could use UV1/2 filter to cut this for my smaller camera lenses.

But.. as most will know the LP1 filter in later cameras cuts IR just beyond the HA range as well as UV, so you gain around 4x IR sensitivity but lose the out of focus far IR and UV.

It has a black mask on one side and a rubber gasket on the other, as well as a large piezo element and a ribbon cable. I had to cut the ribbon cable off, but it was then possible to 'wangle' the filter under the metal frame. Even though the new filter was much thinner, the thickness of the gasket against the sensor cover glass meant I was able to use the old rectangular spring clip that screws onto the frame to hold the new filter in place. Luckily I hadn't thrown away the clip and screws!

Put it all back together and, LO! It still works!

Now I just need to lose this wind and cloud...

Many thanks to Jelto for making this possible!
