rabbithutch
Seeking opinions about the pros and cons of focusing: helical vs Crayford style. Is one better than the other for particular types of viewing, for ease of use, for stability (not disturbing the focus once chosen), or any other purpose?I have no experience of either type, really. The (ahem) new 8" dob I got yesterday has a helical focuser. I've promised myself to spend no money on new kit until I've used the scope for 6 months (yeah, right!); so I'm NOT about to purchase one. I just wanted to know if I should keep my eyes open for a deal on a Crayford style. TIA-bob, uncle to 23 at last count
John
The Crayford is more usually found but helical can work well if it's well engineered and smooth in operation. It's a fast scope a 2-speed focuser is helpful - the fine focus knob for precise adjustments.I'd give it a go and see how you get on.What scope did you get ?.
