Hi Dickie and welcome to SGL from me too :)

I second the use of Stellarium and TLAO as mentioned above. Also a pair of 10x50 binocs which can be had quite cheaply nowadays, would be a great intro to the hobby. You'll use them even once you have a telescope, so a good investment. Try Liddl's "Rocktrail" binocs for about £15.
