where to put the pier?

My question regards the positioning of the pier when I build my ROR observatory. I will have a 6x8 ft shed with the long axis E-W, should I place the pier dead centre of have it offset in any direction?

if you can swing the scope through a six foot gap then I would put the pier three feet from one end to give you some usable space at one end of the obs.

You should also consider a few other points before you place the pier:

You can position the pier to the North of centre to get a better view south (or vice versa etc etc.)

You can deliberately place the pier NOT to see your neighbours lights - or street lights.

Or you can "maximise" a particularly "good" directional view from your observatory.

Don't forget - it is useful but not essential to be able to see Polaris (actually the NCP) to help with alignment.
