Limit to seeing as a disc?

For the last few weeks I've been easily able to see Jupiter as a tiny but clear disc in my battered and miscollimated 10x50s. But when looking at Venus this morning I couldn't make out anything like a disc.

According to various online calculators Jupiter is looking much bigger at the moment - 48 arc sec compared to Venus at 12 arc sec, so perhaps that's why.

Is there a formula like Dawes' limit, but which applies to how big something has to appear before it shows as a disc in a given aperture?
