my pier base is an approximate 2' cube of concrete with steel legs hammered into the ground at each corner before the concrete was poured. The whole thing sits on Essex clay and being near the coast I don't expect to suffer from frost heave. On top is a 200lb pier and AP1200 with up to 100lbs or so of scopes/weights.

No detectable movement so far, or shouldn't I say that?

Mines on built up ground some 10 feet above the road level...but been like that for about 50 years... So I went with 3 x 6' long 2" x 1/4" steel angle irons driven about 5' in at an angle in the foundation before casting the concrete pier foundation around them... Only time will tell....
