June 24, 2024: Some fireworks in H-alpha

Recommended Posts

Just had a quick peek at the sun with my Coronado SolarMax-II 60 mm, and was treated to a beautiful view of the sun. A few big sunspots dotted the lower half of the sun, with some attendant plage, but the show was stolen by a huge filament on the left-hand half of the disk, running more-or-less north-south. At the nine-o-clock position a thin, almost straight prom pointed away from the sun at nearly 90 degrees from the surface, just beyond the far end of the prom a detached, curved structure could be seen, also thin and filamentous, at about an 80 degree angle from the prom. Just south of the base of the thin prom, another thin prom stood out at a 20-30 degree angle from the surface, pointing downwards. Fascinating view. Will have another look over my lunch break.
