Synscan EQ5 Goto Motors upgradeable ?

I've searched around in case this has already been covered anywhere, but couldn't find anything, so apologies if I've missed it....

How configurable is the motor control unit of the Skywatcher Synscan EQ5 goto unit ?

Can it only interface with the standard (double geared) 12v stepping motors, or can it work with belt driven motors instead ? 

I'm assuming it's expecting an exact rpm/stepping amount for each pulse, coupled with it's own standard gear ratios.

...and I guess, (from my limited knowledge on this subject ?), that belted motors would inevitably have completely different steps ?

I know the EQMod controllers are fully configurable for use with any motor, but I wondered if the standard Synscan EQ5 Goto was tied specifically to the supplied stepping motors ?
