Naked (eye) in Nottingham

I spent 30 minutes in a car park less than 150 yards from a road in  one of Nottingham's NE suburbs (whatever is just past Sneinton) this evening. I was surprised to discover I could see M42 and stars down to mag 4.25 (top of Orion), even with the moon out and my eyes only adapted from an hour of driving. I could JUST make out the central star of Cancer but Leo was easy to make out, as was most of Gemini. That's not bad for 2km from a big city centre.

I'd left my scope imaging the Rosette at home, but all was clouded out by the time I got back.
