Baader Contrast Booster as Mars Filter?

Mak the Night

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of using the Baader Contrast Booster (stacked or singularly) as a planetary filter, particularly Mars, on a smaller scope like a 102mm (4") reflector.

The reason I ask is that I was wondering whether it would be a good (and cheaper) alternative as a Mars filter to the TeleVue Bandmate which is possibly primarily designed for larger apertures than 4" (at least with reflectors).

I'm interested in any thoughts on this.

I've not used one myself but Neil English includes it in this piece:

Thanks. I know it is intended primarily for use on achromatic refractors and is based on Baader's Neodymium filter. I suppose being designed with the smaller apertures of refractors in mind the Contrast Booster could work well on a 4" Mak as a Mars filter. I don't know whether it will be any more effective than the Neodymium though. I haven't had a chance to view Mars with my Neodymium yet, but I have used it on M42. It has been suggested that the Contrast Booster stacked with the Neodymium could be very good in the right conditions.
