Stability of mount on a field

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

About to purchase my first scope. I am thinking of getting a 200p SW Dob but am a bit worried about its stability on a field. I don't have a concrete base to put it on, but will be on grass in a field. Will this be any good or would I be better with a tripod type mount?

Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

I use my dob on an lumpy grass field (our front yard..) and it is quite stable as long as the ground is not frozen. The dob base has 3 small leg-pegs and they are enough to stabilize it if you set it down so that it is approximately level. If the ground is frozen , then it is a bit more difficult since the pegs wont sink at all into the frozen ground.

Thanks guys, that is reassuring. Unfortunately too much light pollution on our main back garden, hence using the field....
