Coated optics question

Recommended Posts

How much of an improvement does coated optics make? Does it make up for smaller aperture within reason? For example, would be a better/brighter image? The Orion APEX 127mm MAK with its coated optics or the Orion Skyquest XT8 dobsonian? Thanks again.

The newer coatings increase transmission and reduce scatter but they do that by maybe one or two percent in systems that already achieve transmission figures in the mid-late 90s. Theres no getting around the fact that aperture rules and coatings certainly couldn't put a 5" Mak and a par with a 8" Newt, all other things being equal of course.

One thing to consider about a scope with newer coatings is that it'll hold its price better if you ever want to sell it on but they are no substitute for aperture and well figured optics (although having all 3 would be ideal!!!)
