I know i'm new here, but I have a long history with working with the internet - including running several huge forums (for games developers/publishers and several large motoring clubs to name but 2).

It is the nature of the beast that people will get into a destructive mindset or simply be unable to regulate real life conduct within a virtual environment.

I don't know the perpetrators, but I do know that losing memberbase is something that no webmaster enjoys.

Well done on the transparency and for taking the initiative.
