Observing with Snow...

Recommended Posts

This may be a dumb question, but are our viewing and seeing conditions in any way affected by snow on the ground? Only reason I ask is that because of its reflective ability it was so bright last night outside.

Just wondered whether we see any effect looking up in the night sky...?

If there is any humidity in the air above the snow, it will reflect the light reflected by the snow, causing a hazy sky. Otherwise, the snow on the ground keeps the air near the ground stable temperature wise to reduce heating or cooling effects that can degrade seeing. Any smoke from area fire places, stoves, etc may add to the air above scattering light reflected off the snow, causing a hazy sky.

All these things may be trivial in effecting transparency and seeing above the observing site but you dis ask. Hope this answers your question.
