if it is any help to you I bought a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter and it works on my Vista and Windows 7 machines.

I will look into it if all else fails, they cost about £40 from what I seen, I just found a seller on fleabay who wants £6 for one that will work with windows 7, searched USB to DB9 (other name for the rs232)
