M42 - multiple exposure times

Recommended Posts

After several months imaging dim and difficult DSOs, I thought I'd revisit M42. I have imaged this many times in the last two years, and I always find that the central area gets burnt out. For such a big and bright target, it's quite difficult to image.

This time, I decided to try and compose an image from different exposure times using the method suggested by Jerry Lodriguss. This image is made up from:

  • 40 subs of 3 minutes each
  • 16 subs of 30 seconds each
  • 1 5 second sub for the Trapezium

I used an unmodified Nikon D7000, Hutech IDAS filter and my Meade 5000 127mm APO. I stacked using Nebulosity and processed in PS CS5.

I'm pleased with the result, especially as I have caught the Trapezium...

...and the components of Iota Orionis...

The picture isn't quite framed as I'd have liked, but that's difficult with a focal length of 950mm.

I hope you enjoy my picture and welcome any comments, good or bad.

Tom.
