I understand similar mid-range category, but nevertheless - does one offer an edge over the other?

Do you mean Orion Optics (UK) or the USA brand Orion ?.

Much of the latter brands equipment comes from the same manufacturer that produces Skywatcher stuff, used to produce Helios (an earlier brand name for Skywatcher) and is of very similar quality.
