Think you have your terminology a bit wrong.

A flatteners purpose is to correct the optical path and reduce the field curvature. This is so that across the sensor the focus point is equal.

Flats are an image taken such as the twilight sky. The purpose is the correct for vignetting and for easy subtraction of dust particles in the optical path :rolleyes:
