Light pollution question.

I will have another opportunity to have dark skies, and I've been researching the area I will be staying at and I noticed that there will be a very big hotel near by to the north, but aside form that I don't think there is much of anything in the way of light pollution near by. My question is that I've heard that there is either no lighting, or all lighting is pointed down on the beach front, and I was wondering if that made a difference or should I just avoid looking north while I'm there?
