It is an amazing feeling, just want clear skies so I can start discovering the night sky. I have bought the book Turn Left at Orion which was recommended and I have to say it is an interesting read.

Thanks guys just need to get out to a dark sky area and experiment. I always get out early evening and spot Venus to the west of my place. The down side is it is a built up area.

Well after days of setting up and doing the adjustment required and taking the advice given on here, I have spotted Venus tonight. Yes I know it’s no big deal but for a newbie seeing your first planet it is amazing. What looks like a star a bright blip in the sky turns out to be a round/oval planet. Yes it was blurry but I was in a light polluted area, with cloud cover in parts but I could make it out using my Skywatcher 130P and 10mm skywatcher eye piece on a EQ 2 mount.
looking forward to tomorrow night now.- 19

I am a newbie and I bought second hand from FaceBook Market place. I paid £60 for the Skywatcher 130 and EQ2 Mount and for what I paid I think I got a good deal. Look around I think second hand you will get a lot more for your money. The money I saved has allowed me to buy additional equipment and books. Good luck in your search.

Thank you to everyone who has replied and provided some useful information. Advice which I will be taken.
Where I live in Newcastle it is not a dark sky area and I think I need to get out and do some star gazing from a dark sky area. Checked the local areas out for a dark sky are using the link posted above.
i also need to learn how to use the telescope at the moment, my expectations are that I will look through the scope and see stars close up and I need to start initially looking at planets 🪐 first and buy a moon filter.
Definitely going to buy the book “Turn Left at Orion”.
Lots to learn, but thanks for all the advice, I no doubt will be posting further on this forum.

Hi new to star gazing and bought a second hand Skywatcher 130P it came with a 10mm and 25mm eyepieces. Just wondered what the more experienced star gazers think of this telescope is it any good for a beginner.
Any recommendations on what eyepieces to get. I have ordered an Orion Shorty 2 x Barlow but thinking of getting a 6mm Celestron Omni Series 4 Element Plossl Eyepiece 1.25” would this be a good buy?Would welcome any advice you can give a newbie. Thinking of buying another eyepiece possibly a 9mm. First impressions are mixed but think this is down to my inexperience. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance
