That's a really great package - I was in the process of trying to write something myself to do the same job - you've saved me a huge amount of effort - thanks. Could you point me towards a link for the hardware side - I'm happy to design and build circuit if someone know the interface requirements for a synscan controller. Thanks Paul

  5. All good advice, but don't be scared of imaging - even with a basic setup. Assuming the link below works: This was taken with my skywatcher 127 (more than your budget, but still pretty basic) on a fixed mount - a small P&S camera held to the eyepiece recording a movie then stacked in one of the many free programmes...

Just to clarify, I wasn't thinking about a GPS solution, but something like this:- https://www.sparkfun.com/products/7915 (though I'm guessing thats whats inside a gps..) So, the general gist is that its not really worth doing (except maybe as a fun project) and I'm better off getting roughly aligned with a standard magnetic compass and then doing a multi-star alignment? I know I could use a polar-scope, but unless anyone knows of one with a right-angled eyepiece, I was avoiding this as I don't want to be grovelling around on my hands and knees to look through it..
  9. Hi folks, I'm thinking about a little project (just for the fun of it) to try and automate some of the initial setup required. My plan is to us an electronic compass to find magnetic north and then offset this to find true north (I'm assuming that the centre of the circle that polaris describes is true north - is that a valid assumption?). I've seen devices which claim accuracies of +/- 1 degree, 0.5 degree and 0.1 degree. Obviously the more accurate the better, but given that I want to keep the cost down, how much accuracy do I need for: a) observing and imaging? Thanks Paul
  10. Digging up an old thread here, but I've got a similar idea. I fancy using an old hand-held garmin to give my synscan goto controller an accurate time and position feed. If I've understood what's been said already: It'll plug into the RJ11 on the handset, not the one on the motor control board; It probably won't work because the firmware doesn't understand nmea anymore... So, I was thinking - is the correct data format used by the skywatcher mouse known? I'm thinking that if it is, this could be a fun little project to convert between the two with a raspberry PI or similar (though it would also

  14. Thanks for all the thoughts - plenty to think about. I don't normally suffer from the cold (as an exiled northerner) maybe its because this hobby involves a lot of sitting doing nothing. For reference, What i usually wear is thick wooly hiking socks and wells on my feet, jeans, a thin cotton long-sleeved shirt, fleece and winter coat, insulated hat and gloves. So I feel like I should be OK... Maybe I just need to man up a bit and take a flask out with me
  15. Don't get me wrong, I love looking at the skies and the first time I saw saturn's rings i was quite moved... But, this time of year no matter how many layers of clothing /hats etc I put on, I end up loosing interest due to the cold after about half an hour, which is barely time to set everything up and align the scope properly. Then just to compound things, I suffer quite badly if i don't get enough sleep and so in summer months I'm usually in bed before it goes dark. Can anyone offer any encouragement? Thanks Paul
