Glad you did, it's applicable to my situation. I asked on the Pegasus forum if my Pocket Pegasus could control the 12V outputs separately but my question remains unanswered. I would like to turn my flat frame light box on at the end of the session. I should have asked here! This thread tells me only the Ultimate can do that.
In answer to your question, I do as Scotty38 advised, My mount and cameras are connected to a pc in the garage via a Pegasus Pocket Box and I remote to that from my indoors pc, in the warm, using Teamviewer over the internet. I use NINA, CPWI, PHD2 and the Pegasus software all running in the garage and controlled from my front room with no problems.
Regards
Graeme
Hmm....I just trying to get away from putting "another" pc in the loop. So are we saying my plan won't work??

Apologies for jumping on this thread. Just waiting for my gear to turn up and making sure i've got everything covered. Ive asked before on here and i "think" I had it sorted in my head but then this post has confused and worried me again.
So, my set up.
EQ5 Pro Goto
WO ZS73iii
ASI120MM Guide cam
Nikon D7100
My Plan
Want to operate the scope from directly my main PC upstairs. I've purchased the Startech USB2004EXTV 4 port USB 2 extender. Am i correct in saying that that is all i need to make my plan work ? Other than power to the mount itself. 🤔

Just recieved, didn't think it was going to be sooo literal. Im going to need ALL those photons just to read the teeny tiny print 🔎 Thanks FLO for prompt delivery

yes so power goes into the remote end and will supply power to the ASI120 so no worries there.
Ok Cool, thanks ...so mount from mains, usb thingy will power guide scope camera and normal camera battery for the dlsr. Correct ?

It would be worth looking at the detail of the hub and what power it can supply. Something to be aware of is that usb devices have common power, this means that the last source you disconnect supplies power to everything. You need to get into a routine of turning devices off before turning the hub supply off otherwise something may go pop and it could be your laptop port. All the best.
From the manufacturers website. Ti's all Greek to me 🤔

So I've bought one of these to allow me to control everything from the house. Will that provide power to the guide scope? ASI 120 mini
Assume mount EQ5 Pro can plug into mains ?

I "thought" i needed this but im just reading astrobackyards review on the WO ZS73 and he mentions "The Flat73 1:1 field flattener is recommended for full-frame astrophotography cameras"
I plan to initially use a D7000 and then down the line, possibly a dedicated camera. So, do i actually need it ???

For years (and it will sill be the case once my pier is in service) I simply had a 4 way usb hub like this one :
which sits inder the mount on the tripod, and where dslr, guide camera and mount handset are plugged. This hub is in turn plugged into a 5m USB extension cable which comes either into my laptop or into another 5m extension that goes to my main computer in my office. This 2x 5m basic cable does the trick. See video here :
Thought usb's had limited run lengths ?
-
Thanks both, so to clarify (just to get it in my head.)
USB hub tapped to the mount, this connects to mount itself, D7100 and guide scope. Then ethernet cable back from hub to PC.
This will then allow me to use the full potential of Nina as per his video
-
Been watching Lazy Greks videos regarding Nina and noticed he has a mini pc set up and then controls that, if I'm understanding correctly, via laptop over wifi....all good.
But, if I wanted to control via laptop itself, bypassing said mini pc, (another cost I could do without), from within the house, is that doable?
Realise the pc would need to be tethered to the mount, is that what the eqmod cable does and if so what lengths do they come in ? Is that the only cable from pc to equipment?
I don't intend to go down the AISAIR route.
Many thanks

This might be a "dumb" question but here goes. When standing in an "average" garden, let's say 15 x 15m houses all around. How much of the horizon is blocked by the neighbouring houses?
Wanna know what things I can see using stellarium

Just watching Martin Astrophotographys' video on plate solving.....and i LOVE it.....and I haven't even got a scope yet🙃 It actually seems really quite simple or is that my newbie naivety, or just the great calm way he explains it....?
Anyways. He uses SG Pro......are there any equally as good tutorial's for the free plate solving software he mentions that you can recommend.
I know PS isn't a necessity for a newbie but I I like learning stuff

It's a no contest decision, eq5 will be way better overall if you've got the storage space for it.
Yep, that's what I thought....👍
On a side note. I was going to get a guide scope and guide camera. Considering what I'm going after initially, beginner dsos, the scope I'm using and the dark skies I have, can I do without that for now. Money I save on those will nearly pay for upgrading the mount?
-
I was going to get the former but now im thinking the latter would be a better choice?
AP of DSO objects under Bortle 3 skies using WO ZS 73iii, guide scope and cam, flattener and DLSR. Total weight of those, going by manufacturers specs, is just under 4KG,
This setup will only get used a few times a year and i have no intention of upgeading any time soon.
EQ5 pro a better choice ?

The one I'm "hopefully" about to buy for myself. Does that count 🤔

I think it comes down to how the images is displayed. Astroinmaging you stack the images and process them after the fact to get the most detailed final product and might image a target for hours.
EAA you are generally stacking live with a bit of stretching applied to get detail out, but not heavy processing. Time frames are generally shorter per target.
It's the difference between 'good and good enough' in a way
Ooh, OK, so a stacked live image....tech has come on indeed
-
Just browsing the EAA forum, as I'd never heard of it. What am I missing, isn't it the same as "normal" imagining?
-
Just starting back out, concentrating on widefield DSOs. Are there any "goto" youtubers, instructional sites that cover most of the basics that I'm going to need. Ie ones that give consistent good advice. It's all very well randomly searching but you are never 100% sure advice is correct

If you're going to use the dslr as is, an intervalometer will help (they're cheap) unless if the camera has one built in, a t ring to connect the camera to the back of the flattener (check the flattener spec for backfocus distance you need to set the camera for it to reach focus). If you're going to use the laptop to control image capture you'll need a usb cable from the camera to computer (you might already have one), this will enable you to use the software focus routine which will be more accurate than a manual method bahtinov mask.
I believe I can control the camera via a usb cable and Astro Photography tool (been reading astro backyard primer), if the D7000 cant be controlled I also have a D7100 which i believe definitely can.
Will need to do some research on the t ring, thanks

have you considered the guidestar plus FF at less cost which is also less weight.
https://www.firstlightoptics.com/william-optics/william-optics-guidestar-61.html
I use the SW evoguide and that was for weight and cost purposes.
i did....but ruled it out. If im understanding correctly the 73 will get me a tad "closer" and then even more so once i add a dedicated AP cam ?

I think I just stumbled this post, started reading, then started worrying damn, what else do I need, seems to be quite common in this hobby. 🙄😀
Must stop reading.....all my kit should be with me soon, will set it up and THEN ask questions, if need be.
Cheers Steve....my post wasn't dismissing your advice, just over thinking 👍
