  1. I use a ZWO EAF on my Astroberry and it works like a dream. Never had a single niggle with that. I understand your pain on USB ports, I managed to find a powered USB3 amazon basics 10 port hub which runs off 12v. I also run a deepskydad FP1 (motorised flat panel) which is runs no bother on astroberry and just works on ekos.

I happen to have a SW autofocuser on my dob, and you cannot connect that to a computer, it's just a motor with a couple of buttons for in and out (and a fast/slow switch/knob). Only handy for manual focusing, so a really badly named product that is quite confusing. Its a good enough thing, just not suitable to auto focus using a computer.  The EAF is excellent though.

I've been trying the plate solving and guiding software in EKOS, on my Astroberry Pi (using the simulator mode).  When it comes to plate solving a star that I've chosen, it says there's no enough RAM to run in parallel in the message window, then locks up the whole EKOS/KStars programme.  I know that people have recommended running the RPi with 4GB of RAM, but I was only able to obtain a 2GB version.  I didn't foresee this problem, but I'm a newbie to the RPi.

    Any recommendations?🤔

I did see someone in the for sale section selling a pi4 4mb...  I run Astroberry on a Pi4 4mb myself with local plate solving and memory hasn't been an issue for me... I do get the occasional unexpected crash in Kstars, but nothing memory related.

  3. I use mine with a EOS60Da on the back with no problem. I use an Astroberry (free mod for Raspberry Pi which is really all the ASIAIR is too)  which runs the mount (HEQ5), camera, EAF , GPS, plate solving, autoguiding, polar alignment  and camera sequencing, and pretty much everything else using KSTARS and INDI. It even lets me hook in with SkySafari on my phone over the wifi, which is nice. All works really well.

  4. I built my adapter as per instructions but alas it just isn't powerful enough for my EOS 760D - I guess its the 1A part that is letting it down as the voltage is perfect. I'll try it on some of my other cameras when I get the chance...

Just stumbling across this thread. I'm looking into controlling a Skywatcher Alt AZ GTi with a python script sending the alt/az coordinates from a Raspberry pi. Do you think I'd be able to use the direct Skywatcher serial connection?? I'd need the mount to constantly slew to the coordinates given from the raspberry pi (every second or so).

I've started using the rather good Astroberry on my Pi 3B and I'm using the SW USB dongle which replaces the handset and acts as EQMod. Works fine on my HEQ5. All uses INDI and Kstars / Ekos to bring it all together but was actually pretty straight forward, and no Python coding skills needed 😉 The Astroberry even acts as a wifi module for your gear and lets SkySafari connect to it and control everything from your phone / tablet.

  6. And now I have it working with SkySafari on my phone and iPad too. I was thinking about spending £300 on a SkiFi 3 last week until I tried Astroberry, now I can just use my Astroberry, awesome.  Am I starting to sound too much like a fanboy now...😎

  7. I downloaded Astroberry for the first time this week onto my old RPi 3 that was sat in a drawer. In no time I had it talking to my HEQ5 and Canon DSLRs. I bought a £5 real-time clock on amazon and had that up and running in 10 mins and today my £20 usb gps dongle came and I had that up and running with GPSD in in about 10 mins too. (Last step too 5 mins to work out, remembering to add the GPSD to the indi server config on the left before connecting to the Pi)

Im really impressed with astroberry so far.

the GPS dongle Is at https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07LBWF1P7

  8. There are truly very few people who have made nearly as much impact on the people of this planet as Sir Patrick Moore did. He will be sadly missed.

I'm going to do the complete Moore marathon as a kind of tribute. Who's with me?

We should definitely name something up there after him. Perhaps a 'Moore's Monacle' nebula or asterism.

  9. Absolutely, I love this place and have had lots of good advice (still debating quattro vs 200pds in another forum for my second scope) but the aim of this particular thread must be to garner new suggestions from newbies who come here with fresh eyes otherwise it would just people saying how great sgl is. It is great btw. I love you guys.

I just feel it's my duty to challenge the status quo and see I can't help it be even better.

Like i say it's a great resource for us all and I love it here.

  10. One thing I would change is the 50 post limit to get to buy and sell. I understand why it's there, but newbies are some of the people who would benefit most from 2nd hand gear. If I want to go there I'm left with the options of waiting until I hit 50 posts organically, or shamelessly spamming to get to my 50.
