UHC filters on Galaxies - Rejection versus Acceptance

Recommended Posts

Just a casual one really... And perhaps more related to VIDEO Astronomy...  :p

I do wonder if standard UHC filters might be useful in (B&W) imaging Galaxies

e.g., apart from nebulae: Which is more important? Reducing "Orange" light

pollution, or preserving main-sequence (yellow star?) structure of Galaxies? :)

I can doubtless "try it myself", but wonder if there is any experience / opinion...

Hi,  I think, in my limited experience, that a UHC can be used for galaxies.  I believe that the light pollution would clog up your image even though it is B&W.  This is not a great picture but it was taken with a DSLR and  a Baader UHS-S filter.  Unfortunately the color sensor combined with this filter turned my M51 blu but it could be converted into grayscale for B&W.  Still I think that the contrast between the subject and the sky glow of the city where I live is very good considering the brightness of this galaxy. BTW I got this from my FB page so its a lot smaller than the original. Hope to have been some help.  CIAO
