There's also the point of post processing - would you compare without processing?

A lot of post processing is really just flattening the range of the signal to fit within the observable display range. For example - you may have a 1024 bit colour depth, however if your desktop PC/Mac can only show 8 bits of that then people attempt all sorts of curves and processing to compress those 1024 bits into 8 bits but leave the noise behind..
