Live View enabled but nothings changed (no preview on LCD)

Camera: Canon 1000D

I've got 'Live View Function Settings' enabled, 'Grid display' Off and Metering Timer to 16 seconds.. These are the only Live view settings on the camera that I could find but tampering with them lead to absolutely nothing. Sp then how is Live View enabled?
